Black Flag Resynced gives Stede Bonnet a real ending, and it’s not something the 2013 original ever bothered with. The stede bonnet mystery island epilogue closes out the gentleman pirate’s arc with a new letter, a stranded ship, a mutiny, and a proper send off that fans have wanted for over a decade.

In the original Assassin’s Creed IV, Stede Bonnet showed up as comic relief in the opening hours and then quietly vanished from the story. Resynced fixes that. The remake adds a full new questline built around him, a set of teaching missions that use him to introduce the game’s reworked stealth and parkour systems, and a returning voice actor who’s been playing this character since 2013. Here’s how it all fits together, and why Ubisoft finally gave this side character the spotlight.

Why Stede Bonnet Got a New Story Arc in Black Flag Resynced

Game Director Richard Knight addressed the change directly in Ubisoft’s official deep dive on the remake, saying that “coming back to the Caribbean gave us some opportunities to address some hanging threads from the original game,” and that players “have been wondering what happened to Blackbeard and Stede” ever since 2013. Knight also pointed to Stede Bonnet’s recent pop culture visibility (the character has become far better known since the 2013 release thanks to shows built around the same era of piracy) as part of the reason the team wanted to “give both characters a proper send off and to tie a bow on this Bonnet.” That’s the same expanded content wave that also gave Blackbeard his own Sequence 8 treasure hunt, which we broke down in our guide to Blackbeard’s treasure map location and cave solution.

It helps to know the real history here too. The actual Stede Bonnet was a retired British army major who walked away from a Barbados sugar plantation to become a pirate in 1717, and his career lasted barely 20 months before he was captured at Cape Fear Inlet and hanged in Charleston on December 10, 1718, along with 29 members of his crew. The 2013 game never touched any of that. Resynced doesn’t recreate the execution beat for beat, but the new epilogue finally gives the character a conclusion instead of just dropping him.

What Happens in the Stede Bonnet Mystery Island Epilogue Quest

The new Captain Stede Bonnet quest unlocks after you finish the main story mission “Marooned” in Sequence 8. Head back to the manor at Great Inagua and read Bonnet’s First Letter in the room with the fireplace, where he explains he’s currently locked up in a Charles Town jail and asks Edward to check on his ship and crew before anything happens to them. From there you sail out to Mystery Island, roughly around coordinates 906,122 on the eastern side of the Navassa region, one of several unmarked islands worth exploring beyond the main map, similar to the secret spots we cataloged in our unmarked islands guide.

Dock and swim toward the mangrove beach until you spot The Revenge, Bonnet’s abandoned schooner sitting stranded with no crew in sight at first glance. Talk to Rowland Sharp and you’ll learn a mutiny broke out after Bonnet was locked up, the traitors stole the key to his cabin, and they’ve been hoarding the remaining provisions ever since while holding the loyal crew off. One of the surviving crew members will point you toward the mutineers, who are gathering further down the shore to plan an attack. Clear them out, then push through the flooded lower decks to the barricaded cabin door at the end of the corridor.

Inside the cabin you can look over pieces of Bonnet’s life scattered across the room: his diary sitting on the round table, boxes of sugar stacked against the wall (a callback to the plantation he walked away from), and a pardon letter he never got to use. The item that actually matters is a letter sitting next to a dagger on the desk. Interacting with it rewards Bonnet’s Portrait, Bonnet’s Dagger, and Bonnet’s Final Letter. Return to the manor’s basement at Great Inagua and place the portrait alongside the rest of your collection to close out the quest, and don’t skip the nearby chest either, since it holds the Stede Bonnet Attire outfit as a bonus for finishing the epilogue in full.

The Tutelage Missions That Teach Stede to Survive Nassau

Before that ending plays out, Stede gets a whole separate string of content earlier in the game. Once you’ve established your hideout in Nassau, a set of Tutelage side quests starts appearing on the map, marked with golden exclamation points near the taverns. In these missions Edward actually teaches Stede how to move and fight using the newly revamped stealth and parkour mechanics, the same overhauled movement and takedown systems we covered when we looked at Black Flag Resynced’s hidden finishers and legacy outfit changes. The missions send you escorting Stede through guarded plantations in Havana and Nassau, and unlike the escort sections in a lot of older games, Stede actually reacts to what you’re doing. Take out a guard with a stealth kill and he’ll respond to it in real time instead of just standing there waiting for a scripted cue.

It’s a smart way to fold a tutorial into the story instead of just throwing a loading screen tip at you, and it gives Stede far more screen time than the few scattered scenes he got in 2013. By the time you reach the Mystery Island epilogue, he’s not just a name from the prologue anymore, he’s a character you’ve actually spent hours with.

Where the Stede Bonnet Arc Fits Into the Sequence Structure

If you’re trying to plan around this content, here’s the order it plays out in. The Tutelage missions start showing up once your Nassau hideout is established, well before the midgame, and they’re spread out enough that you’ll likely finish them gradually while doing other side content. The main Captain Stede Bonnet letter and Mystery Island quest unlock after “Marooned” in Sequence 8, the same story beat that opens up Blackbeard’s expanded content, so the two characters’ new arcs effectively run in parallel from that point forward. The actual epilogue then plays out heading into Sequence 9, once you’ve had time to sail out to Mystery Island and work through the mutiny.

None of it is required to finish the campaign, so if you’re focused purely on the main story and how it wraps up (we covered that in full in our Black Flag Resynced ending explained review), you can miss the entire Stede Bonnet arc without realizing it’s there. Still, it’s worth going out of your way for. The rewards feed directly into your manor’s collection at Great Inagua, and unlike a lot of side content that exists purely for loot, this arc actually changes how you think about a character who barely registered in the original release.

James Bachman Returns as Stede Bonnet, Not a New Actor

One thing worth clearing up here: James Bachman isn’t a new voice for this character. He’s the same English actor and comedian (known for The Mighty Boosh, Saxondale, and Bleak Expectations) who originated the role of Stede Bonnet back in the 2013 original, and he’s returned for Resynced to record fresh performance capture for all this new material. Almost the entire 2013 voice cast came back for the remake with no major recasting, which we go through in detail in our full rundown of every returning Black Flag Resynced voice actor. Given how much new dialogue Bachman had to record for the Tutelage missions and the epilogue, having the original actor back matters. It’s the difference between a character getting a genuine continuation and a character just being recast for the sake of new content.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Stede Bonnet quest unlock in Black Flag Resynced?
The main Mystery Island quest unlocks after you complete the “Marooned” story mission in Sequence 8. The Tutelage side missions unlock earlier, once your Nassau hideout is up and running.

Where do you find Stede Bonnet’s ship?
His schooner, The Revenge, is beached on Mystery Island, roughly around coordinates 906,122 in the Navassa region. Dock nearby and swim toward the mangrove beach to spot it.

Is James Bachman a new actor for Stede Bonnet in Resynced?
No. Bachman voiced Stede Bonnet in the original 2013 release and returned to reprise the role for Resynced, recording new performance capture for the expanded story arc.

What rewards do you get from the Stede Bonnet epilogue?
Completing the cabin sequence gives you Bonnet’s Portrait, Bonnet’s Dagger, and Bonnet’s Final Letter, and a nearby chest holds the Stede Bonnet Attire outfit. The portrait goes on display in the manor basement at Great Inagua.

What happened to the real Stede Bonnet historically?
The real Stede Bonnet was a former British army major turned pirate whose career lasted about 20 months before he was captured and hanged in Charleston on December 10, 1718, along with 29 of his crew.

That wraps up the stede bonnet mystery island epilogue and everything that leads into it, from the Tutelage missions teaching him to survive Nassau to the closing letter waiting for you on Mystery Island. It’s a small side arc in the grand scheme of Black Flag Resynced’s campaign, but it’s the kind of addition that shows the remake wasn’t just chasing better lighting and sharper textures.
